Pre-election report on the rise of the far right party, Hrisi Avgi (Golden Dawn)
On May Day, Greece is braced for large demonstrations, with anti-austerity protesters likely to take part.
The far right Golden Dawn Party has been delivering food to the needy and is gaining support fast.
They are anti-immigrant and often labelled neo-Nazis but polls suggest they will enter parliament for the first time, as Mark Lowen reports.

Ευρωπαικές και διεθνείς υπεραγορές υπάρχουνε και στη Ελλάδα όπως σε άλλες χώρες.
Οι Γάλλοι εκπροσωπεύονται από το Carrefour και οι Γερμανόι από το Lidl.
Το πρόβλημα που αντιμετωπίζουνε είναι το αίσθημα μεταξύ μερικών Ελλήνων πως να κάνεις τα ψώνια σου σε αυτά τα καταστήματα είναι να μη υποστηρίξεις τον έλληνα εργάτη, τη ελληνική οικονομία και βιομηχανία και τους έλληνες αγρότες.
Σωστοί ή λαθασμένοι βλέπετε σ’αυτό το φωτορεπορτάζ πως αντιδρούν αυτές οι ξένες αλυσίδες και παράδειγμα πατριωτισμού από τραγούδι στο ΤΗΛΕΑΣΤΥ.

BUY GREEK
Large European and international supermarket are to be found in Greece like in most other countries.
French Carrefour and German Lidl are probably the most well-known and prolific.
The problem that they’re facing is the increasing impression among Greeks that by shopping in these supermarkets they are being unpatriotic, not helping the Greek economy to recover and not supporting Greek farmers and manufacturers.
Here’s how they’re responding and an example of the rising patriotism when it comes to filling yours supermarket trolley.

Photoreportage: Playing to their strengths - Political posters
I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a single poster for either the main centre-right New Democracy or centre-left PASOK parties and believe me I’ve been looking. That probably speaks volumes in and of itself.
Here is a mix of posters and newspapers adverts to give you a flavour of the Greek election campaign from the big four parties and one anti-privatisation poster:
PHOTO 1: Conservative New Democracy: ‘Action so we can safely again in our cities.’ Proposals include ‘Taking back our cities from ghettos of illegal immigrants and fast-tracking deportation procedures.’

Πράγματι δεν πιστεύω πως έχω δει αφίσα της ΝΔ ούτε του ΠΑΣΟΚ στις μετακινήσεις μου στη Αθήνα. Πρέπει να υπάρχουν κάπου… στείλε μου φωτογραφία μέσα του Τουίτερ.

Photoreportage: Les affiches politiques
Honnêtement je ne crois pas avoir vu des affiches a Athènes des deux partis principaux : celui de la centre- droite, la Nouvelle Démocratie, et celui de la centre-gauche, Pasok (le parti socialiste panhellénien). Cela montre déjà l’atmosphère des ces élections
Voila un mélange de publicités politiques dans les journaux et des affiches dans les rues. De plus, une indication du sentiment fort contre les reformes – une affiche contre la privatisation de la compagnie d’eau grecque.

Nationality, Ethnicity and Identity
“So where are you from”
“ Well I’m British… but my family originates from Cyprus”
“Oh.. so you’re Greek.” (Νote the lack of question mark)
Immigration is playing a central role in the both the Greek and French election campaigns. In Greece, the leading centre-right party is planning to rescind nationality from those who obtained under recent socialist legislation. All this has led me to question what it means to be Greek or French or British in 2012.
Is it a question of your identity, does it depend on where you were born, do you need to study your family tree, is it a simple case of what your passports says, is it a matter of religion, outlook and language.
In France, I was always ‘le grec’ and in Greece, even though I’ve never lived here, many people seem to see me as a long-lost Greek with Cyprus and her diaspora apparently linked intrinsically to Greece.
During some recent filming we need a greek-speaker and a colleague said: ‘Let’s send Costas, not just a Greek but a Greek Cypriot’, as if that enhanced my Greekness.
Does it not matter that I was born in Britain, that my mother tongue is English, that my entire education took place in London, that my closest friends are British?
Even in the UK, where my sense is that Brits are more comfortable than Greeks regarding the multicultural nature of their country, a friend recently referred to me as ‘the Greek’. No racism was implied or taken but it does indicate perhaps the identity which you have even among the most open-minded.
Can you fully integrate into a society or, even in the most accepting of host communities, will there always be that difference? Would it make a big difference if I had an ‘english’ name or if I looked more ‘english’?
These are questions of paramount importance in Europe today and for the moment at least there do not seem to be clear answers. Greek and French voters will point us in a particular direction though on May the 6th.

Ιθαγένεια, εθνικότητα και ταυτότητα
«Από που είσαι;»
«Βρετανός είμαι… αλλά η οικογένειά μου κατάγεται απ΄τη Κύπρο.»
«Τότε Ελληνας είσαι…» (δίχως ερωτηματικό)
Η μετανάστευση είναι στο κέντρο του πολιτικού διαλόγου αυτών των εκλογών και στη Ελλάδα και στη Γαλλία. Με τη πιθανή κατάργηση του νόμου Ραγκούση, προεκλογική υπόσχεση της Νέας Δημοκρατίας, διερωτούμαι τι σημαίνει να είσαι Ελληνας ή Γαλλος ή Βρετανός το 2012.
Είναι ερώτημα προσωπικής ταυτότητας… είναι θέμα τόπου γέννησης.. πρέπει να μελετήσεις το γεναιολογικό σου το δέντρο… είναι απλά τι λέει το εξώφυλλο του διαβατήριου σου.. είναι θέμα θρησκείας, σκέψεως και γλώσσας…
Στη Γαλλία ήμουνα ‘grec’ και στη Ελλάδα αν και ποτέ έχω ζήσει σ’αυτή τη χώρα πολλoί με θεωρούν απομακρισμένος Ελληνας… η Κύπρος και η ομογένειά της στενά συνδεδεμένες με τη Ελλάδα…
Σε μία πρόσφατη περίπτωση που χρειαστήκαμε ελληνόφωνο για ένα ρεπορτάζ εδώ στη Αθήνα, ένας έλληνας συναδέλφος είπε «να στείλουμε τον Κώστα, ο Ελληνάρας, μάλιστα ο Ελληνοκύπριος…»
Δεν έχει καμία σημασία πως γεννήθηκα στη Βρετανία, πως η μητρική μου γλώσσα είναι τα αγγλικά, πως όλη η εκπαίδευσή μου ήτανε στη Αγγλία, πως οι στενοί μου φίλοι Βρετανοί είναι…;
Αλλα και στη Βρετανία, αν και νιώθω πως η χώρα θεωρεί πιό θετικά τη πολυπολιτισμικότητά της σε σύγκριση με τη Ελλάδα, ακόμα πρόσφατα ένας φίλος μου ανάφερε σαν ‘ the Greek’, δίχως καμία ρατσιστική έννοια αλλά αποκαλύπτοντας όμως τη ταυτότητα που έχω στα μάτια μερικών…
Μπορείς να ενσωματοθείς απολύτως σε μία κοινωνία ή πάντα, αν και η κοινωνία φιλοξενά τους αλλοδαπούς, θα υπάρχει πάντα απόσταση; Τι διαφορά θα έκανε εάν είχα ‘αγγλικό’ όνομα και φαινόμουνα πιό άγγλος…
Μεγάλες και σημαντικές ερωτήσεις είναι αυτές για όλη τη Ευρώπη αλλά για τη ώρα δίχως ξεκάθαρες απαντήσεις. Οι Ελληνες και Γάλλοι ψηφοφόροι όμως θα μας ‘δώσουν ένδειξη τη 6η Μαΐου

‘Ah.. donc vous êtes Grec.’ (Pas d’un point d’interrogation)
L’immigration est au cœur des campagnes électorales en Grèce et en France. A Athènes, le parti de la centre-droite, en tète selon les sondages, envisage les règles plus forts sur l’acquisition de la nationalité grecque. Tout cela me pousse à mettre ce concept en question. Qui est un Grec, ou un Français ou un Britannique en 2012?
Est-elle une simple question d’identité personnelle, dépend-elle de votre lieu de naissance, faut-il étudier l’arbre généalogique, est-il un simple cas de lire la couverture de votre passeport, est-elle une question de votre religion, de votre esprit et de votre langue maternelle…
En France, j’étais toujours le Grec et en Grèce, bien que je n’aie jamais vécu dans ce pays, beaucoup de gens me prennent pour un Grec éloigné et pensent que Chypre et sa diaspora sont intrinsèquement liés à la Grèce.
Pendant un tournage récent, on avait besoin d’un hellénophone. Un collègue a dit: ‘Envoie Costas, un Grec et encore plus un chypriote grec’. Etant chypriote = étant encore plus grec?
Peu importe que je suis né en Angleterre, que ma langue maternelle est l’anglais, que mon enseignement entier est grâce au système éducatif britannique et que tous mes proches sont anglais?
Même au Royaume-Uni, selon moi un pays qui est plus à l’aise vis-à-vis son identité multiculturelle par rapport à la Grèce, un ami m’a appellé ‘the Greek.’ Aucune intention raciste mais quand même peut-être une petite indication d’une mentalité de différences sous-jacente.
Peut-on vraiment s’intégrer dans une société même dans les pays les plus accueillants, ou aura-t-il toujours ces différences? Sera-t-il différent si j’avais un nom ‘anglais’ ou si j’avais l’apparence plus ‘anglaise’
Ces sont des questions énormes pour l’Europe aujourd’hui et pour l’instant il n’y a pas les réponses claires. Les électeurs français et grecs donneront un indice le 6 mai…
